Ten things floating our boat in April 2011

It's all change on the boat floating list here at NGC.

1. SOFI

She's dazzled us with her collboration with Moguai, and has been getting around as she has a track with Skrillex in the pipeline which we cannot wait for! She also showed off her live talent in Miami at the Beatport Beach Party and at Ultra Music Festival.

2. Jamie Woon

His amazing voice has really impressed us. It oozes with soul and passion, and we expect big things with his new album out this month.

3. Example

'Changed The Way You Kiss Me' is not out just yet, but we've had the radio debut and boy do we love it. Release coming soon.

4. Justice

The French duo are back with 'Civilization' that has really shown their break has done their music good. We hope a new album is on the way soon.

5. Penguin Prison

Chris Glover's exquisite electro-pop has really got us excited, and we think this guy has a bright future ahead of him!

And the rest:
6. Hurts
7. Moguai
8. Annie Mac
9. Wireless Festival
10. Feed Me

Two artists we like the sound of

So for both of these we're late to the party but it still makes them both excellent. Annie Mac played both of these near the top of her show last night. We had listened to Jamie Woon before, but still we're mightily impressed by both of the following:

1. Jamie Woon

Jamie Woon came 4th in the BBC Sound of 2011 poll, and he rightly deserves to be recognised. His voice is simply outstanding, and the poor bloke had to record at least some of his album in Cornwall, of all places!

Lady Luck, his new single:

'Lady Luck' is available now on iTunes and Amazon. His debut album,'Mirrorwriting', is released on 18th April 2011.

2. Penguin Prison

Once you get past the name and listen to the music, you realise why this New York-based one man band is so incredible. Chris Glover's vocals go hand in hand with his stellar electro-pop production. But despite being reminiscent to Hot Chip and the like, he brings something new to the scene, and we hope he gets some traction, and Radio 1 night time play is a good start.

Here's Penguin Prison performing 'Multimillionaire' live:

'Civilization' by Justice: out now

Justice have returned slightly earlier than predicted.

Their new single, 'Civilization' was due to be released exclusively to iTunes next Monday, however someone decided the public should be able to purchase it now, so you can.

The song has been used for an Adidas commercial, and is right up there with the work from their previous album, .

Buy it from iTunes.

Update: Now fully released, available on Amazon too.

Tune of the Week #1: 'Beat of the Drum' by Moguai feat. SOFI

Welcome to a brand new feature: Tune of the Week!

Every Monday, expect to hear what we think is the best new tune from across the globe for this week.

Week beginning Monday 28th March 2011

Title: Beat of the Drum
Artist: Moguai feat. SOFI
Label: mau5trap
Genre: Dance/Electro House
Available: Now
Purchase: iTunes
Listen: YouTube

This is the third song that the lovely SOFI has given her vocals to so far, and like 'Sofi Needs a Ladder' and 'One Trick Pony', we love it! Moguai's thumping production is similarly brilliant.

Deadmau5 and SOFI win JUNO Award for Sofi Needs a Ladder (updated)

They did it!

Deadmau5 and SOFI won a Juno Award  for Best Dance Recording yesterday for their massive hit 'Sofi Needs a Ladder' (iTunes, Amazon), which hit #68 on the UK Official Chart and #10 on the UK Dance Chart.

This seems to have slipped the radar as the mau5 and SOFI were performing in Miami at the Ultra Music Festival last night.

Congrats all round.

Update: Lindsey Gayle, deadmau5' girlfriend, just tweeted that Joel and herself will be at the JUNO ceremony tonight!

Editorial: Passing the baton

In the past year or so, the last of this generation of live dance acts have either fallen into obscurity (Basement Jaxx), announced live retirement (Calvin Harris) or announced their intention to split up (Groove Armada and Faithless). This leaves The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy as the last popular live dance acts. Artists such as David Guetta, deadmau5 and TiĆ«sto have far more popularity in the dance music scene, but none of them perform with a live band or in the same vein. Step forward, Elliot Gleave, more commonly known as Example.

Moguai and SOFI's 'Beat of the Drum'

mau5trap is probably the best thing to have happened to NGC. And now two of said label's artists have collaborated on this huge track, released in time for Ultra Music Festival in Miami.

We really dig Electro House stuff, which is good as this is a fine example of the genre. This is the first of hopefully many releases from SOFI this year, and we want the next to be her track with Skrillex. It needs to be released!

'Beat of the Drum' is available now on Beatport.

Example - 'Changed The Way You Kiss Me'

After hearing previews of this track since December from his live shows, it's just incredible to hear the finished product, and boy are we not disappointed.

Produced by Michael Woods, this serves as the first single from Example's third album 'Playing In The Shadows', which is released in September. The single should drop on Ministry of Sound Recordings aka Data sometime in May June.

P.S: Link to the full interview with Zane Lowe from tonight's show, listen in from 30 minutes!
