Dr. Phonics - Whiplash

"Who is Dr. Phonics and why are you posting about him?" I hear you ask. Dr. Phonics is Jacob Mutimer, the brother of a good friend of mine,Tom, and we all go to the same school.

On 21st December he released his first single, 'Whiplash', and Tom advised me I check it out last week so I did.

'Whiplash' is a great electro-house track and I really dig the silence in the middle and the breakdown that follows.

I've listened to some of Jacob's stuff on his old SoundCloud profile that isn't online any more but seriously this guy (and Tom) have some talent.

You can download it on iTunes or Amazon; give him some support and your 69/79 pence!

mau5trap's 'premium gifting period' commences, free download of Moguai's I Cee

deadmau5's record label, mau5trap, have begun what they are calling their 'premium gifting period' today in the run up to Christmas.

First up is a free download of a track from Moguai. 'I Cee' featured on his 'Lyve at Beta' that he released back in March and is available to purchase from Beatport.

The track is only available to download for 24 hours (from around 16:30 GMT) so download from the embedded player above or go directly to mau5trap's SoundCloud page.

Who knows what's in store for tomorrow's free gift? All I know is that I'll put up another post as soon as we hear.

Amazing acoustic cover of deadmau5' Strobe by Jonas Finn Larsson

I heard this last week but took another listen again today and it really blew me away.

Jonas Finn Larsson is the name of the guy who did this and he is clearly uber-talented. He really captures the emotion of the song as it builds, but purely through his guitar.

If you'd like the tab sheet for it I'm afraid you'll have to wait as Jonas said he might write it out and make it available for others at some point.

Sub Focus, Feed Me to play UKF Bass Culture at O2 Academy Brixton in March, tickets on sale now

Hot news this morning is that the first acts for UKF Bass Culture at O2 Academy Brixton on Friday 2nd March have been announced.

Sub Focus (Live), Andy C: Alive, Feed Me (Live), Foreign Beggars (Live), P Money (Live), Borgore, Loadstar, Cutline are all to play the follow up to the sold out UKF Bass Culture event at Alexandra Palace in November.

Tickets for this explosive night are on sale now at Ticketmaster priced £30 + BF.

Press release:

Following the success of November’s incredible debut at the magnificent Alexandra Palace, UKF Bass Culture returns to clubland on Friday 2nd March 2012. This time we take over another of London’s most iconic venues, the legendary O₂ Academy Brixton, for an all-night masterclass of explosive, rib rattling bass music. With this show set to follow the last UKF Bass Culture by selling out many weeks in advance, we can now announce the artists who are topping the bill…

PLAYING THE NEXT UKF BASS CULTURE:
SUB FOCUS [LIVE]
ANDY C: ALIVE
FEED ME [LIVE]
FOREIGN BEGGARS [LIVE]
P MONEY [LIVE]
BORGORE • LOADSTAR • CUTLINE

From hearing one of his tracks for the first time inside a club in 2003 to headlining Glastonbury in 2010, Sub Focus’ rise through the ranks of underground jungle to become a major player in electronic music has been nothing short of spectacular. Initially known for air-punching, dancefloor dismantling drum & bass, Sub Focus has now become synonymous with music that draws from all corners of the electronic landscape, and has come to epitomise the ‘anything goes’ mantra of today’s flourishing dance scene.

UKF Bass Culture LIVE will witness Sub Focus play his biggest ever headline London performance. Here he will showcase a brand new live show and preview tracks from his sophomore album due out later in the year. With an acclaimed and visceral live production that has wowed festival goers and music fans the world over for the past two years, this is set to be an unmisssable night for all fans of this incredible artist.

Following November’s devastating debut at Brixton’s Electric, Andy C brings his mindblowing Alive production back to South West London. By unleashing Alive at one of London’s largest venues, thousands will be given the opportunity to take part in this cutting edge dose of carnage. One of the most spectacular shows in electronic music, do not miss this chance to witness The Executioner at his untouchable best.

The sharp-teethed monster returns to UKF Bass Culture as Feed Me looks to replicate the anarchy of his Alexandra Palace performance. Unquestionably one of the best sets of the night, his hard-hitting electro and mindblowing production took the roof off. The Academy stage plays host to this superb artist for the very first time in what will be another sensational performance.

As one of the most energetic and talented hip hop outfits to ever emerge from the UK, Foreign Beggars are another hugely popular act to join us at UKF Bass Culture LIVE. Managers of the Dented Records imprint, the Beggars have played alongside some of the greatest legends in the game including Snoop Dogg, Public Enemy and Wu Tang Clan.

Grime superstar P Money arrives at UKF Bass Culture to deliver a very special live show. His lyrical swagger has injected new life into the scene, whilst his O.G'z collective continues to push the boundaries.

Similarly Bogore is taking the world by storm and arrives in London off the back of a mammoth sold out US and Australian tour. Having worked with M.I.A, Bring Me The Horizon, Diplo and Jazzstepp and released tunes through Shift Recordings, Terminal Dusk, Trill Bass, Zaudio and Mad Decent, Borgore is one act destined for greatness.

Signed to Andy C’s legendary Ram Records, Loadstar is the musical project from drum and bass producers Xample and Lomax. Their reworks of Breakage's huge vocal smash ‘Fighting Fire’ and Chase and Status' chart hit ‘Blind Faith’ are two of the standout tracks of 2011, whilst their live shows are something to behold.

Known for their jaw-dropping and speaker busting performances incorporating dubstep, drum & bass and electro, Cutline have remixed some of the world’s finest producers and received support from a wide range of the planet’s finest selectors including Skream, Rusko, Andy C, Friction and even Paul Van Dyk; a testament to Cutline’s fluent ability to fuse musical styles effortlessly.

SOFI releases Locked & Loaded Part 2: Bring Out the Devil and Again Sometime?

The wait is over for Part 2 of SOFI's debut EP, 'Locked & Loaded'. Today welcomed the release of two more solo tracks from the Queen of mau5trap.

'Bring Out the Devil' is easily one of the most anticipated tracks of the year. The track was originally produced by Skrillex and he debuted it in San Diago back in February with SOFI. However, Skrillex's laptop was stolen earlier on in the year meaning many of his work-in-progresses, including 'Bring Out the Devil', were lost. However, Kill The Noise came in to save the day. He has reproduced the track, meaning it sounds a bit more Kill The Noise-y but equally as good as before.

The other track on Part 2 is 'Again Sometime?', which features Noisia. What we weren't expecting when we gave the song a listen was to hear 'Tommy's Theme', a single from the Dutch trio released in September on mau5trap. SOFI's vocals adds a new dimension to the track which we rather liked.

You can download the radio edits from iTunes and extended mixes from Beatport.

Tickets for these go on sale next Friday, 9th December 2011 at 9am.

The next part is not clear. We (along with other sites) are expecting dates to be announced for the rest of the UK aside from Northern Ireland. We'll let you know when these are announced so keep checking this post as it gets updated.

The Grammys wake up to EDM: Skrillex and deadmau5 receive multiple nominations

A report a few weeks back suggested that traditional pop acts would not be eligible in the dance categories at next year's Grammy Award ceremony. In the past few years artists such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna have dominated these categories and organisers felt more "hardcore" acts should be included.

We woke up this morning to find Skrillex nominated in 5 different categories: Best Dance Recording (Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites), Best Dance/Electronica Album (Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites), Best Short Form Music Video (First of the Year (Equinox)), Best Remixed Recording (Cinema by Benny Benassi feat. Gary Go) and most surprising of them all, Best New Artist.

Joining him in three of those fields is Joel Zimmerman, a.k.a. deadmau5. He follows up his 2009 Best Remixed Recording nomination with his take on Foo Fighters' 'Rope'. He's also received nominations for Best Dance/Electronica Album with 4x4=12 and Best Dance Recording for 'Raise Your Weapon'.

Some other notable highlights include David Guetta and Avicii's 'Sunshine' and 'Save The World' by Swedish House Mafia, with both being nominated for Best Dance Recording. Afrojack also receives a nod for his remix of Leona Lewis' Avicii collaboration 'Collide'.

The ceremony takes place on 12th February 2012 in Los Angeles at the Staples Centre. It would be interesting to see if any of the artists mentioned above will perform live at the show; it would certainly be a huge milestone for Electronic Dance Music if they do.
